Contributions of Prominent Women in Islam Context The role of women in Islam has evolved over time. During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as well as the era that shortly followed the Prophet’s death, women were given a great sense of power, freedom, and rights. However, because the Quran and hadith are open to many different interpretations, a male-dominated society began to slowly restrict the rights of women and slowly began to push their roles towards staying within the household and being protected by being secluded. This is evident in societies today such as Saudi Arabia. However, over history, as well as in modern times, numerous women have overcome these obstacles and made a clear difference in society. Aishah bint Abi Bakr Perhaps the dearest human being to the Prophet (SAW) was his wife Aishah. She was the daughter of one of the Prophet’s closest companions, Abu Bakr, and was married to the Prophet at a young age. She was known for spending a very large amount of time with the prophet, and among her greatest contributions is the fact that she related a vast number of hadith from the Prophet (SAW). According to Leila Ahmed, in her book Women and Gender in Islam, â€Å"She [Aisha] related 2210 sayings of the prophet Muhammad among which are 170 which have been approved and Bukhari took 54 sayings from them.† Through Aishah, we, as Muslims, gained much insight to the Prophet’s daily and personal life. Without Aishah, we would have missed a large portion of the Prophet’s life. If that does not show the impact fullness of Aishah, I don’t know what would!
