White Resistance to Somewhere in the Darkness Essay -- Somewhere in th

White Resistance to Somewhere in the Darknessâ â â I feel constrained to return to the one novel we have perused that made the most opposition in me and would conceivably do as such in a critical populace of white perusers: Walter Dean Myers' Somewhere in the Darkness.â That the book is elegantly composed or important to perusers is unimportant here - I energetically award both.â Of more noteworthy worry in this conversation is the thought of protection from the book that could without much of a stretch be experienced with a specific populace of rural, white perusers, in particular the individuals who might appear to share the most for all intents and purpose with Jimmy and who, incomprehensibly, would undoubtedly oppose the book. Â â â â â â â â â â â The perusers who include this gathering share much for all intents and purpose with Jimmy. They are to a great extent lower-working class and originate from either illegitimate homes, what may effortlessly be viewed as broken two-parent homes, or potentially live with more distant families in lieu of their common parents.â For any situation, the parent(s) are conceivably missing from the home a lot of the time, engaged with an assortment of dating rehearses and sexual wantonness, got up to speed in criminal behavior and frequently imprisoned or have been, mistreated by substance maltreatment of some sort, and additionally regularly living in a domain of either unobtrusive or clear racism.â I have put forth no attempt to quantitatively legitimize the points of interest of this portrayal however such an examination would without a doubt demonstrate enlightening.â Rather, I declare this general depiction dependent on 12 years of experience of livi ng in a white, lower working class suburb. Here and there, we could without much of a stretch view these perusers as insiders in that they share with Jimmy a few components of a typical familial encounter, however it is the social contrasts among white and ... ...ility: there is no desire for me or my sort. Â â â â â â â â â â â A white peruser's protection from Walter Dean Myers' epic, Somewhere in the Darkness, is unavoidable, especially when that white peruser shares more for all intents and purpose with the hero than not.â It appears the closer in condition the white peruser is to Jimmy, the more he/she may oppose to his social contrasts on the grounds that those fundamental social contrasts cause Jimmy to act in manners that appear to be probably not going to a white reader.â The key is to know about those distinctions and be happy to perceive what Jimmy sees - from his place of view.â If we are eager to do that, at that point Myers' work is an awesome and viable approach to learn about Jimmy and his way of life as well as about ourselves and the expectations we have for our lives. Minnesota Essays - MinneapolisSaint Paul, Minnesota, Minneapolis

Minnesota Hello there! I'm Amanda. I decided to do my report on Minnesota since that is the place I'm from. Truth be told, my entire family is from Minneapolis. I figured it would be intriguing to find out about where I originated from. So sit back, unwind, and appreciate my report on Minnesota. Like every single other state, Minnesota has numerous exceptional characteristics of its own. The Norway pine is the state tree. The nut case is the state flying creature. The pink and white woman shoe is the dazzling state blossom. Star of the North is the state witticism. To wrap things up, the gopher is the state creature. They are on the whole exceptionally intriguing and one of a kind to Minnesota. Minnesota is an abnormal name the same number of might think. That is on the grounds that Indians caused it to up. In their language, minne signifies water, and sotah signifies sky-tinted. All things considered, the moniker is Place where there is Sky Blue Waters. There are more than 4,757,757 individuals living in Minnesota. The four greatest urban communities are Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, furthermore, Bloomington. Minneapolis is the greatest, yet St. Paul is the legislative center. Minnesota is encircled by the conditions of Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, and North Dakota and Canada. I've visited huge numbers of these states, and I can let you know that the absolute most delightful individuals live in Minnesota. In Minnesota, there are numerous intriguing spots to go. Probably the most well known are the Boundary Waters Canoe Region, the Mayo Clinic, Fort Snelling, the Glensheen Mansion, Ironworld USA, the Minnesota Zoo, Murphy's Landing, the Science Museum of Minnesota, Paul Bunyan Land, The Guthrie Theater, and one of the most well known of all (particularly me), the Mall of America. There are additionally numerous lakes, backwoods, state parks, and games. I never knew there could be such a significant number of spots to go in one state. In the same way as other different states, Minnesota has its own specific manners of getting things done. With common assets of rich soil, significant minerals, and thick evergreen backwoods, the significant ventures are cultivating, mining, and the structure of streets, office structures and lodgings. The yields ranchers develop are corn, oats, wheat, potatoes, soybeans, peas, and numerous others. With all the large urban communities, I never knew there was so much cultivating in Minnesota. Minnesota's atmosphere has four unmistakable seasons. Temperatures normal around 68 degrees F in July and 2 degrees F in January. Likewise, consistently, they get around 19 crawls of downpour and day off. It's a fun spot to live on the off chance that you like both summer and winter exercises. There are numerous authentic realities about Minnesota. Quite a while in the past icy masses secured the majority of the land that we currently call Minnesota. Two celebrated French hide brokers, Pierre Esprit Radisson and Medart Chouart were the primary white men to go to this land. Prior to that, lone Indians lived here. Another well known individual, Sinclair Lewis (an American author) lived in Minnesota. Some other intriguing realities about Minnesota are that it has the greatest shopping center in America (the Mall of America), and one of the most notable streams in America (the Mississippi waterway) starts here. There are a great deal of fascinating things about Minnesota. At the point when I decided to expound on Minnesota, I simply did it since that is the place I was conceived. Until I did this report, I never realized how intriguing one state could be. Presently that I picked it, I believe I settled on a decent decision. On the off chance that I needed to picked over again I wouldn't adjust my perspective. In the wake of contemplating Minnesota, I'm extremely glad to state that is the place I'm from.

RecomMITted

RecomMITted I â€" all of Class of 2019 â€" had been looking forward to this day all semester. I even downloaded a countdown tracker on my phone, reminding me every time I turned on my phone the number of days until Delivery. Its motivated me to get through some hard weeks â€" Its almost time, they said. Day-of, I still had a pset due at 10pm. Delivery started at 7pm. I finally committed the last of my code at 7:15p, and hastily dressed up and headed over to the State Room. Luckily, groups of people were still flooding in, packing a thousand or so 2019s into two floors overlooking Downtown Boston. It was indeed a gorgeous view. After picking up my rings â€" I ended up going with a gold and an Ultrium companion, not an easy choice considering all the options! â€" and snacking on some food, I went off to take pictures, lots of pictures. An entire night worth of pictures. Luis G. 19 and I met during our summer preorientation program. Been best of friends ever since. Photo creds: Burhan A. 19. Skating friends, Ananya N. 19 and Diane Z. 19 â€" were all from the Bay Area but didnt meet until we got here! Our group chat is also more affectionately called, We eat a lot. Many weekends spent brunching in and exploring Boston. PC:  Alden J. 20. Jenny X 19 and I met during orientation week, and were TechX xFair Logistics, then SpecialX Committee, buddies!  Our friendship relies on tagging each other in as many memes as possible. PC: Alden J. 20. Photobooth pics with the freshmen-year Burton Conner crew. PC: automatic camera. Julia L. 19 and I sat at the same 8.02 table  â€" and have continued to take classes together ever since! Both 6-3s and possibly Design minors, too. Many late night snacking and psetting sessions in the libaries and the Student Center. Oh, and office hours too. PC: JC Woodard. 8.02 TEAL group, also known as team rocket. Weve kept our group chat going ever since. Nan T. 19, left, and I were Day Ones â€" she was one of the first people I met at MIT. Weve been best of friends ever since. Bill P. 19, middle, was in my Media Lab advising group and seminar with Professor Michael Bove. Throwback to Orientation!  Still havent gotten around to eating cheesecake together as promised after two semesters of planning. Something to look forward to in the next two years.  PC: Chheangkea Ieng. Best friends, David W. 19, Luis G. 19, and I, flashing and flexing our brass rats. PC:  Chheangkea Ieng. The Fierce Four? From left to right, Megan F 19, me, Jessie W. 19, and Vivian Z. 19. Cant even remember how we all met, but weve been known to holler aiyah to one another ever since freshmen year. PC:  Chheangkea Ieng. Conner 511 freshmen suitemates, reuinited. From left to right, Madiha S. 19, me, Lily J. 19, and Scott C. 19. Spent an incredible two semesters, including some of my most memorable moments at MIT, with them. PC: Chheangkea Ieng. â€"â€"â€" This semester has been by far the toughest, most challenging to date. Psets take twice as much time â€" often even more than that. Ive left lectures bewildered, more confused than Ive ever been, witnessing more esoteric diagrams, numbers, and concepts than I can keep track. Exams are harder than I have ever imagined. The workload stops for nothing. Not CPW, not Spring Break, not Marathon Monday, not even Ring Delivery. Getting through to this point of the semester made this night all the more special. â€"â€"â€" Looking back at my last two years here, Ive constantly reminded myself that I didnt come to MIT expecting easy. It was by choice. Though, there have been many nights this semester where Ive questioned why Im here. Why I gave up full-ride scholarships and Ivy leagues. Why I gave up the opportunity to go to school in the same department as my older brother close to home. Why I left everything I knew and migrated to the other side of the country. Why the weather here sometimes sucks when instead I couldve be basking in sun taking naps on the quad in 75 degree weather year-round. Then I always come to the same conclusion: because MIT. Committing here wasnt easy. But I knew that by choosing MIT, I was choosing discomfort â€" four years of constantly pushing myself, challenging myself, and making the most out of my time here. Building up myself, coming out more robust, more resilient, more confident, with the tools I need to take on anything. Would I have felt the same way at a different institution? Maybe. Knowing myself, I probably would have pushed myself in the same way. But theres something so unique and invigorating, this energy and buzz, that the campus, the communities, the people that make MIT, MIT, projects. The incessant grind, its electrifying. So, too, are the classes and professors, labs and research, projects and depth of opportunities. Now, every time I see a brass rat, I think about all that, and how far I have â€" and every other Engineer before me has â€" come to get to this point â€" the celebratory halfway mark. The brass rat means so much more than the hardware â€" or even the designs and the work of art that it is. Frightening, humbling, and empowering, as Anelise N 19 puts it, and I wholeheartedly agree. Inspiring, too, Ill add. Nearly two years of the Institvte, I cant see myself wanting to be anywhere else. Its been a journey. Its been one heck of a roller coster ride. It hasnt been easy by any means, but its been an exhilarating, most rewarding ride. A worthwhile one. Ill be carrying all those emotions on my ring finger far beyond the next two years. â€"â€"â€" Yet, we are only halfway there. Theres still much left to learn, more people to meet, more things to tackle. I cant wait to see what two more years of the Institvte will offer. One things for certain: wherever I go, my brass rat will follow. Post Tagged #Brass Rat #photography #Ring Delivery

Summary on Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem People have said that â€Å"obedience is a virtue and that disobedience is a vice,† for centuries. History of the humankind was started by an act of disobedience and it is not very unlikely that it will end by an act of obedience. Adam and Eve, being part of nature in the Garden Of Eden, had disobeyed an order. By disobeying the order they made man emerge â€Å"from a pre-human harmony and was able to take the first step into independence and freedom† as Fromm says. Adam and Eve were set free after the act of disobedience that broke the bond between nature and made man individuals. For man to become fully human and to learn all of their capabilities they had to leave the Garden of Eden. Prophets had said that man had not been corrupted by the sins but were freed by the pre human harmony. History is when man becomes human, â€Å"during its unfolding he develops his powers of reason and of love until he creates a new harmony between himself, his fellow man and nature† says Fromm. The â€Å"end of days† is what the new harmony is it’s the period of time where there is peace between man and man and man and nature. Prometheus had also did an act of disobedience, he had stolen fire from they gods and gave it to the people. Unlike Adam and Eve, he did not ask for forgiveness or repent, Instead, he said â€Å"I would rather be chained to this rock than be the obedient servant of the gods. † Man will ruin itself if all they do is obey, they would follow hate, greed, and fear. Fromm says, â€Å"If a man can only obey and not disobey, he is a slave; if he can only disobey and not obey, he is a rebel (not a revolutionary). † If man follows his own judgement rather then that of others then he is being â€Å"himself. † There are two types of conscience: the authoritarian conscience which is the internalized voice of authority that we are eager to please and are afraid to displease; and the humanistic conscience which is the voice that calls us back to ourselves. People try to force obedience but it does have disadvantages like the people rebelling and overthrowing whomever is trying to force the obedience. Fromm says that â€Å"Man must want an even need to obey, instead of only fearing to disobey†, so there is no chaos and man can finally accept obedience and not just disobedience. In ending, man has lost the awareness of himself obeying and disobeying. Fromm says â€Å"At this point in history the capacity to doubt, to criticize and to disobey may be all that stands between a future for mankind and the end of civilization. † Don’t waste time! Essay about Branches of Philosophy - 1384 Words

Branches of Philosophy It is my understanding that there are three main branches of philosophy. These three branches include Metaphysics, Ethics and Epistemology. Metaphysics finds its focus through questions on reality. These questions include: What is real? What is mind and what is matter? What kind of reality do we have? Epistemology deals with truth versus opinion. Questions include what is truth, and what is its source? Is truth absolute or relative? Lastly, Ethics deals with right and wrong. It also deals with the interactions between people and their society. Students of Ethics might ask ‘What are our obligations to ourselves and society?’ and ‘Why should one be moral?’ I will attempt to answer this question. I think it is†¦show more content†¦Socrates believed that no man could knowingly do wrong if that person truly knew the right course of action. Socrates defines moral as being the logical result of rational thought. Through reason, one will know morality. Plato, a student of Socrates, held a similar view. Plato taught that moral values are absolute truths and thus are abstract perfect entities. He called this the ‘Idea of the Good.’ The Idea of the Good is the supreme source of all values. Plato felt that this was the fulfillment of truth and reality. He also defines this good as unachievable. This good is something to be sought after, but never achieved. Aristotle held that there were two kinds of virtue: moral and intellectual. He felt that morals are the tempering of man’s natural desires and appetites. Intellect, he says, is the development of acceptable habits through repetition. He believed that ‘We become just by doing just acts.’ Aristotle argues that most virtues fall at a mean between more extreme character traits. According to Aristotle, it is not an easy task to find the perfect mean between extreme character traits. In fact, we need assistance from our reason to do this. Additionally, Aristotle disassociated morality from God. He taught that God is too pure to bother with such trifles. He states that God is ‘Thought thinking thought.’ Descartes felt it necessary to prove the existence of God. He attempts rational deduction based upon unproven axioms of supposed self-evidentShow MoreRelatedExplanations of the Branches of Philosophy1358 Words   |  6 PagesExplanations of the Branches of Philosophy Jacqueline T. Dinosaurs (372 words) Essay Example For Students

Dinosaurs (372 words) Essay DinosaursDinosaurs: How they became extinct Something happened 65 million years ago, atthe end of the Cretaceous period, something so devastating that it altered thecourse of life on earth. It seems like it happened so sudden, as geologic timegoes, that almost all the dinosaurs living on earth disappeared. So how didthese dominant creatures just die off? Was it a slow extinction, or did ithappen all of the sudden? These questions bring rise to many different beliefson how the dinosaur disappeared over 65 million years ago. Extinction itself iseasily defined: When the birth rate fails to keep up with the death rate, it iscalled extinction. But, the definition does not answer the question about thenature or causes of extinction. Paleontologists generally divide extinctionsinto two types, for that of different causes arose. The first is calledbackground extinctions, isolated extinctions of species due to a variety ofcauses. Included is out competition, depletion of resources in a habitat, changes in climate, the development or destruction of a mountain range, riverchannel migration, the eruption of a volcano, the drying of a lake, or thedestruction of a forest, grassland, or wetland habitat. The second type ofextinction is called mass extinctions. There are four main components involved:Large numbers of species go extinct; many types of species go extinct; theeffects must be global; and the effects must occur in a geologically shortperiod of time. 1 The dinosaur could not have lived for ever. No creatures, noplants, no tiny bacteria are forever, not even Homo sapiens. Extinction is thefate of all species. One theory on how the dinosaurs became extinct is that ofcarbon dioxide, and the ?greenhouse effect?. Volcanoes produced the proposedconditions. A massive volcanic eruption could have saturated the atmosphere withcarbon dioxide so that it caused a sharp rise in temperatures worldwide. Theexcessive carbon dioxide would have permitted solar energy to enter theatmosphere but would have blocked the radiation of most surface heat back outinto space, therefore causing the ?greenhouse effect?. Rising temperaturescould have killed off or reduced the activity of plankton, disrupting foodchains and also messing up the plankton?s normal role in converting carbondioxide to oxygen through photosynthesis. From there it would not have been longfor all the dinosaurs to have been suffering, and then to become extinct.

The Politics By Aristotle Essays - Forms Of Government, Politics

The Politics By Aristotle In the book The Politics, Aristotle analyzes different types of political communities. He examines these political communities on two different levels; first as a city and then as a regime. By studying both city and regime you get the full picture of the different types of governments throughout the world. Aristotle uses this dual approach to describe the different types of regimes. Through his evaluation of the city and regime, Aristotle comes to the conclusion that oligarchies, which are governments that are ruled by the few, are deviant regimes because they govern for the good of the rulers, and not for the good of the whole. The city is the first level that Aristotle uses to evaluate different types of political communities. A complete city ?is the multitude of such persons that is adequate with a view to a self-sufficient life? (Aristotle pg. 87). Villages are collaboration of many households that have come together so they can obtain non-daily needs. Since villages are not self-sufficient, they join together to form cities. Cities provide you with the things your household and your village are not able to provide to you. Therefore, the city is the only thing that can exists self-sufficiently, and it exists for the sake of living well. The city is also the most authoritative partnership. The city embraces all other partnerships and therefore, it aims at the most authoritative good of all, which is living well. Aristotle uses ?city? to generally describe political communities. The city only describes the people who inhabit it; it does not distinguish who the rulers are or what kind of rule the city has. The citizens are an important aspect of political communities because knowing the citizens allows you to investigate what type of regime that particular city has or should have. To find out who rules the city you have to study the city's regime. Regimes are the second level of analyses Aristotle uses to describe political communities. A ?regime is an arrangement of a city with respect to its offices, particularly the one that has authority over all matters. For what has authority in the city is the governing body, and the governing body is the regime (Aristotle pg. 94).? A regime is a ?part? of the ?whole? that deals with decision-making. When analyzing a regime, you are determining who is ruling the city and what kind of rule the city has. Examining regimes is the specific way to evaluate political communities; it is the way to tell one political community apart from another. According to Aristotle, there are both correct and deviant regimes. Regimes that aim at the common advantage of the whole city are correct regimes because the regimes are just with moral laws. They allow their inhabitants to be citizens and participate in government on the basis of virtue instead of wealth, birth or beauty. Regimes that aim at a private advantage are deviant regimes because they are excluding part of the ?whole.? An oligarchy is a type of political community in which the rich, who are the few, have the power to rule. The affluent believe they deserve to have total power, because they contribute more to the city from their extensive wealth. Therefore, the wealthy believe they should have greater voice in the city, because they have more invested into it. To analyze an oligarchy you first need to look at it in general terms, meaning you need to observe the city and its individual citizens. The city is composed mainly of poor people, and they receive very little power or opportunities for political involvement. Whereas, the wealthy believe they should have more representation in the city because they own more of the land even if their representation is basis or corrupt. The regime in an oligarchy is a small part of the whole city. For example, the rich only consist of a small fraction of the whole city. The governing element is based upon inequality of authority. The wealthy do not believe that it is fair to give everyone the same amount of authority, because authority should be proportional to the amount of financial support that you give to the city. The affluent do not realize

All About Pirates and Their Treasure

All About Pirates and Their Treasure We’ve all seen the movies where one-eyed, peg-leg pirates make off with great wooden chests full of gold, silver, and jewels. But this image isnt really accurate. Pirates only rarely got their hands on treasure like this, but they did still take plunder from their victims. Pirates and their Victims During the so-called Golden Age of piracy, which lasted roughly from 1700 to 1725, hundreds of pirate ships plagued the waters of the world. These pirates, while generally associated with the Caribbean, did not limit their activities to that region. They also struck off the coast of Africa and even made forays into the Pacific and Indian Oceans. They would attack and rob any non-Navy ship that crossed their paths: mostly merchant and slave vessels plying the Atlantic. The plunder the pirates took from these ships mainly were trade goods profitable at the time. Food and Drink Pirates often plundered food and drink from their victims: Alcoholic drinks, in particular, were rarely if ever allowed to continue on their way. Casks of rice and other foodstuffs were taken on board as needed, although the less cruel pirates would leave enough food for their victims to survive. Fishing ships were often robbed when merchants were scarce, and in addition to the fish, pirates would sometimes take tackle and nets. Ship Materials Pirates rarely had access to ports or shipyards where they could repair their vessels. Their ships were often put to hard use, meaning that they were in constant need of new sails, ropes, rigging tackle, anchors, and other things necessary for the day-to-day maintenance of a wooden sailing vessel. They stole candles, thimbles, frying pans, thread, soap, kettles, and other mundane items and would often also plunder wood, masts, or parts of the ship if they needed them. Of course, if their own ship were in really bad shape, the pirates would sometimes simply swap ships with their victims! Trade Goods Most of the loot gained by pirates was trade goods being shipped by merchants. Pirates never knew what they would find on the ships they robbed. Popular trade goods at the time included bolts of cloth, tanned animal skins, spices, sugar, dyes, cocoa, tobacco, cotton, wood, and more. Pirates had to be choosy about what to take, as some items were easier to sell than others. Many pirates had clandestine contacts with merchants willing to purchase such stolen goods for a fraction of their true worth and then resell them for a profit. Pirate-friendly towns such as Port Royal, Jamaica, or Nassau, Bahamas, had many unscrupulous merchants willing to make such deals. Slaves Buying and selling slaves was a very profitable business during the Golden Age of piracy, and slave ships often were raided by pirates. Pirates might keep the slaves to work on the ship or sell them themselves. Often, the pirates would loot the slave ships of food, weapons, rigging, or other valuables and let the merchants keep the slaves, who were not always easy to sell and had to be fed and cared for. Weapons, Tools, and Medicine Weapons were very valuable. They were the tools of the trade for pirates. A pirate ship without cannons and a crew without pistols and swords were ineffective, so it was the rare pirate victim that got away with his weapon stores unplundered. Cannons were moved to the pirate ship and the holds cleared of gunpowder, small arms, and bullets. Tools were as good as gold, whether they be carpenters tools, surgeons knives, or navigational gear (such as maps and astrolabes). Likewise, medicines were often looted: Pirates were often injured or ill, and medicines were hard to come by. When Blackbeard held Charleston, North Carolina, hostage in 1718, he demanded- and received- a chest of medicines in exchange for lifting his blockade. Gold, Silver, and Jewels Of course, just because most of their victims didnt have any gold doesnt mean that the pirates never got any at all. Most ships had a little gold, silver, jewels, or some coins aboard, and the crew and captains were often tortured to get them to reveal the location of any such stash. Sometimes, pirates got lucky: In 1694, Henry Avery and his crew sacked the Ganj-i-Sawai, the treasure ship of the Grand Moghul of India. They captured chests of gold, silver, jewels, and other precious cargo worth a fortune. Pirates with gold or silver tended to spend it quickly when in port. Buried Treasure? Thanks to the popularity of Treasure Island, the most famous novel about pirates, most people think that the bandits went around burying treasure on remote islands. In fact, pirates rarely buried treasure. Captain William Kidd buried his loot, but hes one of the few known to have done so. Considering that most of the pirate treasure to be had was delicate, such as food, sugar, wood, ropes, or cloth, its not surprising that idea is mostly a myth. Sources Cordingly, David. My tutor told me that, to develop fluency in language, there is a need to read extensively. This will not only develop my fluency in writing, but will also develop my speech. In my pre-school years, I remember playing reading games. This gave me exposure to the English language as I learned new vocabularies with each passing day. Apparently, some of the words were confusing. This encouraged me to search a dictionary to enable me understand the vocabularies. However, this was tricky. California Advocacy Paper Research Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

California Advocacy - Research Paper Example This essentially will make the very sickest of San Diegans go to the black market to obtain the drug, because many of these San Diegans rely upon public transportation. Locating these cooperatives in industrial zones will take the cooperatives out of reach of public transportation modes, such as trolleys and buses. Although the other side does have valid points, in that many of the cooperatives have abused their privileges, as these cooperatives are selling to individuals who do not have medical marijuana cards, this is not true of all cooperatives. Therefore, the only fair regulation of the cooperatives would be to examine all cooperatives thoroughly, and separate the wheat from the chaff. The cooperatives which are serious, in that they only sell to individuals with valid medical cards, should be allowed to stay open and stay within the city limits. The others will simply have to close. This is the only way to please the people who are concerned about the abuses associated with the se cooperatives, while ensuring that the very sickest continue to get the treatment that they need and deserve. Examination of the Issue The City Council of San Diego voted, 5-2, on March 26, 2011, to put restrictions on the medical marijuana dispensaries located within the city.1 These restrictions would close down the dispensaries for one year, then, after the year is up, the dispensaries may only operate in industrial zones .2 The final ordinance is a slight improvement over what was proposed. In the original proposed ordinance, dispensaries would have to apply for permits while going through the strictest permit approval process in the city, which would be a Process 4. Process 4 also covers new airports and mines.3 The proposed ordinance also would have required that the dispensaries, after the one year ban, would only be able to open up in areas that are more than 1,000 feet of churches, schools, child care facilities, libraries, parks, youth facilities and other dispensaries. 4 While this was the proposed ordinance, the city council, after hearing testimony from concerned citizens, voted to reduce the 1,000 feet requirement to 600 feet, and to reduce the Process 4 permit process to a Process 3, which is less onerous.5 City councilman Todd Gloria indicated that the 1,000 foot requirement was reduced to 600 feet, as the 1,000 foot requirement would have forced the dispensaries out of the communities that most support them, namely Ocean Beach and Hillcrest.6 However, the city council did nothing about the part of the ordinance that requires that the dispensaries only locate within industrial zones and did nothing about the requirement that every dispensary must close down for one year before re-opening.7 The cost of a permit would be high, from $25,000 to $35,000.8 The proposed ordinance will come up for a second and final vote on April 12, 2011.9 The dispensaries opened up when California passed Proposition 215, by a margin of 55.6% to 44.4% in 1996. It wa s the first state ever to pass such as law.10 When Proposition 215 passed, language regarding medical marijuana was added to the California Health and Safety Code that stated, in effect, that purposes of the Compassionate Use Act 1996 is to protect individuals from prosecution if they possess marijuana that is legally prescribed by a doctor,

Is Weed As Bad As They Say? Essay -- essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Is Weed As Bad As They Say?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Illegal drug use is a major problem in the world today. Millions of dollars are spent every year to prevent the distribution of drugs. All drugs is smuggled into the United States concealed in false compartments, fuel tanks, seats, tires of private and commercial vehicles, pickup trucks, vans, mobile homes, and horse trailers (Pierson. 12-8-01) Large shipments is usually smuggled in tractor-trailer trucks in false compartments and in bulk shipments, such as agricultural products. The government has created ways to cut down on drugs. Yet the drug crisis is greater today then ever. Marijuana is one the most widely used illegal drug. Over the past thirty years the government has condemned Marijuana. So in this paper, I will be describing the pros and some cons about the use of Marijuana. Marijuana use should be legalized because of the beneficial uses that our economy can gain from weed.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Marijuana, also spelled Marihuana comes from the Indian hemp plant, cannabis sativa (Gwinn. Pg.764). It is a crude tobacco like substance produced by drying the leaves and flowery top of the cannabis plant. It is put into pipes or formed into joints, similar to a cigarette, for smoking. Recently, it has appeared in cigars called blunts. The drug is a mild hallucinogen meaning that it distorts sensory perceptions. Marijuana has a wide variety of street names including pot, tea, grass and weed (Dudley. pg. 21) Marijuana can also be added to foods such as brownies and beverages.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The intoxication part of the plant is mostly in its strong-smelling, sticky, golden resin. The hemp flowers, especially those of the female plant, gives the strong smell off. Many users describe two phases of marijuana effects as initial stimulation, giddiness, and euphoria, followed by sedation and pleasant tranquility. Mood changes can often accompany altered perceptions of time and space of one's bodily dimension (Gwinn. pg.765). The hemp plant can be found growing as a weed or as a cultivated plants in peoples homes. Marijuana can survive in almost any soils and climates. And the more potent varieties grow in dry, hot, and wasteland type environments (Pierson. 12-8-01)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Marijuana varies in potency, depending on where and how... ...nbsp;  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Although it is true that there has been no proven studies that marijuana is indeed a life threatening drug (O’Brien pg. 70) But it has been proven that marijuana is a safe, versatile, and inexpensive medicine (Nahas. pg. 58-59) And what makes it even better is that it has been proven that marijuana is less toxic and dangerous than most of the prescriptions drugs given to you by your doctors which you trust (Nahas. pg. 111)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Marijuana is a useful and misunderstood substance. If more studies are done, it can be a helpful assistance to the economy (Skidmore. 12-7-01) Marijuana was legal for many years and we didn't have a big drug problem like today. Marijuana laws, the threat of jail and fines will not stop drug use. All they do is make it harder to help people (Skidmore. 12-7-01) As to me, I respect the right of people to control their own bodies. I believe we should legalize weed, and help those who need it, and let the police spend their time protecting us from real crime. I also believe our society should have a more opened mind on the hemp plant and really see the up side uses of marijuana.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Is Weed As Bad As They Say? “Stray Dog” and “Lost in Transition”

The movie â€Å"Stray Dog† is the classical masterpiece directed by Akira Kurosawa. It is about a rookie homicide detective, played by Toshiro Mifune, who had a stolen Colt pistol. It is ironic how a homicide detective had lost his weapon due to pickpocketing. The Colt pistol stolen from the main character was used in a series of murders, which eventually troubled him. Due to this, Murukami started to hunt the guy who stole his weapon and used it for murder. Murukami who was in search was helped by Sato, played by Takashi Shimura, when the first victim was found. Sato was an old guy, but he was definitely clever. The movie or the manhunt occurs in post war Tokyo, with a partially bombed atmosphere or scenery. Furthermore, the search and the feat occur while a brutal and horrid heatwave is present. The heatwave somehow shows or reflects the living conditions of post war Tokyo, or Japan as a whole (Ishikawa and Tyler, 1998). Japan after the World War II was devastated wherein problems in communication and transportation are at large. Furthermore, living conditions are not that good. There was a severe shortage in the supply of food, and a very high demand for it, and this lasted not just for months but for years. â€Å"Stray Dog†, was filmed in the year 1949 which somehow relates to the time where the story itself took place. Furthermore, the setting or atmosphere in 1949 was evident in the film as justified by the presence of a lot of scenes showing cities or regions which requires rebuilding. The mark or indication of bombings was present in the setting of the movie, just like Japan after the bombings in 1945. Poverty and desolation are some of the things which can be depicted out of the movie and in a way, gives the movie watchers a little feeling of social consciousness. Aside from Japan being withered by the bombings, the harsh or horrible social conditions also depreciates or weakens the soul and morals of a man. This happened to Yasu, the killer or antagonist in the movie, who was once a good person. He shifted to a life of crime after experiencing the harsh effects of poverty and poor conditions of living. Somehow, it may tell the story of some individuals turning towards a life of crime and social evil to continue living in the post war Japan. As the title somehow suggest, â€Å"stray dogs† which could turn later on as rabid dogs, could be representations of a man or of a desolate individual who goes or turns to doing social crimes. Social awareness on Japan also increases as the movie ventures into the dark alleys and criminal or murder elements in the story. Generally, â€Å"Stray Dog† is a good movie, especially to those who love murder or crime-solving movies and even to those socially or slightly socially aware individuals. It is like coursing through history of Japan, without being actually there. The audience are entertained, at the same time taught good lessons. The second movie entitled â€Å"Lost in Translation† is basically a comedy-drama film which hit the box office hits in 2003. It is about an American action movie star, named Bob Harris, who was experiencing certain problems in his career and basically is losing it. Bob Harris, played by Bill Muray, went to Tokyo, Japan in order to shoot a film, more specifically a commercial on Suntory whisky wherein he met Charlotte, played by Scarlett Johansson. Bob and Charlotte went with each other, and experienced or shared an unconsummated romance. Though at some points, they were a little bit uncertain about the directions that they want to take or in their lives or how far they want to take their relationship. Life in Japan by 2003 is far different than that of the post-war Japan. Also, life in Japan is different as that of what Westerners experience. As such, the two characters had a feeling of being alienated as they both toured or explored the life in Tokyo, more specifically Japan’s culture. Since they were both Westerners and that they are in a different country, they both felt loneliness and wanted to be with each other. The second movie takes its audience to the new and modern Japanese cityscape, far beyond the scenery in the movie Stray Dog. After World War II, almost all the regions in Tokyo ware devastated and destroyed. By 2003, the city had risen from the ashes and had grown into a strong city with a lot of beautiful scenery. The scenes or views of the new Tokyo after the war can be observed by the audience not just in the movie alone, but even in the posters, teasers or in the trailer of the movie. Economically and socially, the movie tours its viewers to the new Japan after the devastating war and shows through the scenery, actions or movements and characters how it had recovered. The post war economic success was possible and helped Japan to reinvent itself and be the Japan that we know of it today (Neary, 1995). Just like the Stray Dog, Lost in Translation which was directed by Sofia Coppola, is very much entertaining. Lost in Translation was at first funny, but as the story goes on, audiences experience a unique drama. The ending of Lost in Translation was more mind boggling or intriguing as compared to the ending of the Stray Dog. The audiences in Lost in Translation are left thinking or imagining what the ending could have been. Both movies were able to show the old and new Japan, and if it was watched one after the other, the audience would be greatly aware of the huge transformation that Japan took or went to, before and after the war.
